TrainingBriefs® Micro-Inequities in the Workplace

Understanding Micro-Inequities & Micro-Messages

No matter what the words we say, our actual communication (what others understand about and from us) is influenced by our expression, gestures and tone of voice. In fact, research has shown that only a small percentage of the brain processes verbal communication. Micro-inequities are repeated, subtle, often unconscious messages that devalue or discourage. Our focus on workforce diversity and inclusion underscores the importance of demonstrating respect for individual differences, such as personal styles, work habits, physical characteristics and life circumstances.

Additional Information

Micro-inequities and micro-affirmations are examples of micro-messaging, which is a broader term that encompasses all the subtle and often nonverbal ways that we communicate with others. Micro-messaging can have a significant influence on how we perceive ourselves and others, how we relate to each other, and how we perform in various settings. It's important to be aware of our own micro-messages and how they may affect others. It's also important to challenge and address micro-inequities when we encounter them (at work, at events, etc.) and to practice and promote micro-affirmations when we have the opportunity. By doing so, we can create a more respectful, inclusive, and equitable culture for everyone.
